Tips Asparagus

Soil preparation

  • Prepare sandy, well-drained soil to avoid excess moisture.
  • Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil.
  • Ensure the soil pH is between 6.5 and 7.5.
  • Avoid heavy clay soils that may retain too much water.
  • Loosen the soil by working it to a depth of at least 30 cm.

Planting

  • Plant asparagus crowns in spring after the last frost.
  • Dig trenches 20 cm deep to place the crowns.
  • Space crowns 30 to 50 cm apart to allow them to grow.
  • Cover the crowns with 5 cm of soil, gradually adding more as they grow.

Watering

  • Water regularly during the first few weeks after planting.
  • Reduce watering once the plants are established.
  • Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.
  • Mulch the soil to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Fertilizing

  • Apply a fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium before planting.
  • Feed plants every spring with compost or organic fertilizer.
  • Avoid excess nitrogen to prevent excessive foliage growth.

Maintenance

  • Cut back dead stems in the fall to prepare for the next season.
  • Mulch in winter to protect crowns from cold temperatures.
  • Monitor for diseases and pests like asparagus beetles.
