Tips Blueberry

Soil preparation

  • Blueberries prefer acidic, well-drained, and organic-rich soil. It is essential to ensure good soil aeration for optimal growth.
  • The soil pH for blueberries should be between 4.5 and 5.5. This allows the roots to absorb nutrients more efficiently and prevents diseases.
  • Before planting, it is recommended to amend the soil with sphagnum peat moss to improve its acidity and structure.

Planting

  • Plant blueberries in the spring or fall, in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Avoid heavy, clay soils.
  • Space blueberry plants 45 to 60 cm apart and plant them in holes large enough for the roots to develop freely.
  • Blueberries should be planted at the same depth as they were in their pots. Ensure the base of the plant is clear of the soil.

Watering

  • Blueberries require regular watering, but avoid over-watering. Water deeply during dry spells.
  • Use rainwater or soft water to irrigate blueberries, as hard water can disrupt their development.
  • It is advisable to mulch around blueberry plants to retain moisture and prevent weed competition.

Fertilizer

  • Fertilize blueberries with a specific fertilizer for acid-loving plants, especially in the spring, to stimulate growth.
  • Avoid fertilizers that are too high in nitrogen, as they can lead to excessive growth at the expense of fruit production.

Harvesting

  • Blueberries are harvested when they are fully ripe and uniformly blue. Pick them gently to avoid damaging the fruit.
  • The harvest period can last several weeks. Pick the fruits regularly to encourage continued production.
